The Nation in Numbers: How we count the population

Population statistics aren’t just about counting people—they’re about understanding the nature of our society and its needs. But how are these figures created, and what makes them reliable?
In our next Bringing Data to Life webinar, taking place on Tuesday 24 June from 4pm to 5pm, we’re taking a closer look at these fundamental statistics. From measuring today’s population to modelling tomorrow’s needs, this session introduces the people, methods and data that underpin key decisions across the UK.
Whether it’s the number of hospital beds needed in a region, where to build new homes, or how pensions are planned, population statistics play a central role in policymaking. That’s why they need to be timely, accurate, and adaptable to a changing world.
From estimates to insights
In 2023, the UK’s population was estimated at 68.3 million. By mid-2032, it’s projected to rise by around 4.2 million. But how are those numbers calculated? And how do we account for changes in migration, ageing, and internal movement across the country?
In this session, we’ll break down the different ways we estimate the population. We’ll explore:
- Mid-Year Estimates (MYEs) – the official annual estimates of the UK population, broken down by age and sex at local levels.
- Admin-Based Population Estimates (ABPEs) – an innovative approach using government administrative data to provide more timely and granular insights.
You’ll also hear how these data sources are brought together to support decision-making in the real world.
A perspective from government
We’re pleased to be joined by Sam Mold from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), who will share how ONS population data helps the department understand demographic trends and prepare for the challenges ahead. These insights support everything from modelling and forecasting to policy development and operational planning.
Open to all
This session is designed for anyone with an interest in how data shapes our lives. Whether you’re new to the subject or simply want to understand the numbers behind the headlines, you’ll come away with a clearer view of how we tell the story of the UK’s population.
Like all events in our Bringing Data to Life series, the webinar will be live and interactive, with a chance to ask questions throughout.
