The road ahead for the ONS: a conversation with Darren Tierney

Late last summer, Darren Tierney stepped into the newly created role of Permanent Secretary at a pivotal moment for the organisation. In a new episode of Statistically Speaking our host Miles Fletcher sits down with Darren to talk about what happens next.

With a background spanning complex operational delivery, policy design and leadership across government, Darren arrived with a clear understanding of both the power of data and the consequences when it falters. In this episode, we explore how data has shaped Darren’s career so far, and how that experience informed how he approached his first months at the ONS: listening carefully, assessing honestly, and being clear about what needs to change.

Darren is candid about the need to prioritise the statistics people rely on most, to improve quality and resilience, and to be realistic about capacity: “When we de-prioritise work, it’s not because it isn’t valued – many people rely on and care deeply about those outputs. But right now, we have to focus. Getting our core statistics back on a strong footing is existential for the organisation.”

We also touch on the future. Artificial intelligence is already transforming how data can be collected, processed and analysed, and the ONS is actively exploring how to harness that potential responsibly. At the same time, preparations are getting under way for another England and Wales census in 2031 — a vital anchor for the UK’s statistical system and a signal of long-term commitment.

This is not just an internal reset. What the ONS does, and how well it does it, matters to policymakers, businesses and the public alike.

The road ahead is challenging — but it is also clear. Give the episode a listen HERE.
