The ONS has been helping to establish global standards for official statistics on climate and health.  In March this year, the United Nations Statistical Commission decided to incorporate six new indicators developed in this project into the authoritative Global Set of Climate Change Related Indicators and Statistics.  Here Myer Glickman,  Head of Climate and Global Health at the Office for National Statistics, explains what has been involved and his hopes for what they will achieve.

Building a picture of climate impacts on health

In February 2022, ONS began a four-year project, funded by Wellcome, to develop the first set of official metrics to measure the impact of climate change on health. This will unlock a wealth of new insight, giving countries greater ability to plan services and policies in the face of a range of climate health challenges. As the ONS publishes details of this new statistical framework, Myer Glickman explains the next steps in this important work.

Deaths involving malnutrition have been on the rise. NHS neglect is not to blame

An increase in the number of people dying in hospital with a diagnosis of malnutrition has prompted understandable concern. One leading charity has described the figures as “shocking.” But as Myer Glickman explains, many factors other than poverty or neglect lie behind the figures.
