Bringing data to life: pricing up the cost of living

What does an air fryer, a loaf of bread and vinyl records have in common? Well, these are just a few of the items tracked by the ONS to help us determine how the prices of a wide range of goods and services change annually in the UK. That’s the subject of our next webinar in the ‘Bringing data to life’ series.

The rate at which prices rise – known as inflation – has a fundamental impact on things like interest rates, wages and many other factors that affect our society. Ultimately, the rate of inflation determines the cost of living, and that’s something that matters to all of us on a daily basis.

Find out more

Our next webinar in the ‘Bringing data to life’ series takes place on Thursday 21st November.

We’ll be digging deeper into how the ONS measures inflation in the UK. Plus, we’ll discuss our aim to include data from supermarket checkout scanners for the first time in Spring 2025. This will provide the ONS with a whopping 300 million price points, drawn from the sales of over a billion units of assorted products a month – a dramatic change from around 700+ items currently tracked.

As part of our ongoing collaboration with other official producers of statistics across government, we’ll also be joined by colleagues from HM Treasury for this event. They’ll share how prices data is used to advise on policymaking within government, reflecting the needs of all our communities, and how their vital work feeds into plans to build stronger economic growth across the UK.

All our ‘Bringing data to life’ webinars are interactive, so we encourage you to get involved and have your say!
